Introductory Workshop
Brief information
"People suffering Mental Health problem are same as zombie or vampire? We have to run away when we see them?" Nowadays, many people are still having a wrong concept or mind towards Mental Health patients in the society. At the same time, media always stick a label "Dangerous person" on Mental Health patients, but is it true that patients are devils, and need to keep a long distance between them?
To minimize misconception and understand Mental Health problem correctly, Health in Mind Programme organized an Introductory Workshop with hospital visit at Kwai Chung Hospital on 5th October, 2013 (Saturday). We are glad to invite Mr Francis Woo, Senior Nursing Officer of Kwai Chung Hospital to be the speaker of the workshop.
To let students having real life experience with patients and having more understanding on Mental Health, Mr Woo invited a rehabilitation to share his thought, behaviour and beliefs during his illness period, which let students know more about what a patient looks like. Mr Woo also elaborated the cause, different types of Mental Health disorders, and most important, the communication skills with patients. All these are very useful information for students to organize Mental Health promotional activities in upcoming year.
After the talk, students have a chance to visit Kwai Chung Hospital to better understand hospital patients’ daily activities and environment.
Most of the students were satisfied in this workshop. According to a post-workshop questionnaire, 96.1% of students agreed the workshop content could help them and about 95% of students were satisfied the workshop activities.
