Workshop 1: Myths and Facts

Brief information

Health in Mind Programme organized the “Myths & Facts” workshop at Kwai Chung Hospital on 7th November, 2015 (Saturday). We are glad to have Mr Francis Woo, Senior Nursing Officer (Psychiatric) and Ms. Esther Fung, Clinical Psychologist of Kwai Chung Hospital as speakers of the workshop.

Mr. Francis Woo pointed at some popular myths about mental disorder, and given the students a short quiz on it. He then showed a video clip on the recovery of a mental patient, the challenges he faced in community and the assistance he received. To sum up, he explained to the teens that mental disorder is commonly found, and often the misunderstanding on it leads to stereotyping & thus hinder the recovery and the seeking assistances of the patients.

Ms. Esther Fung then shared with the Teens the vision and mission as the students’ ambassadors of Health in Mind Programme, and the responsibility to raise the awareness on mental wellbeing in school and promote social inclusion in the community. She demonstrated some of the challenges that Teens would face while planning and organizing volunteer services, and practice with the Teens different ways to tackle them. Teens also learnt how to communicate better and show their care to the person-in-recovery through role play.

According to the post-workshop questionnaire, 99.2% of students agreed the workshop could help them know more about mental disorders, and 98.3% of students satisfied with the workshop.
