In Mass Volunteer Service 2: Special Olympics, our Health in Mind advocates participated as helpers to The Hong Kong Special Olympics Regional Athletic Meet, organized by Hong Kong Sports Association on 26th February 2012. The activity aimed to build up self-confidence of mental retardation (MR) students; help them to integrate into the community. Contestants were MR students from Sham Shui Po district. Final results would be the determinant in selection of representatives in international race.
Health in Mind (HIM) advocates were assigned in different supporting roles to ensure the game run smoothly, which provided a good opportunity for them to interact with MR students.
Through direct interaction, HIM advocates recognized the understood the needs and difficulties of MR persons. From their determination and positive attitude, we realized their dedication and tolerance, which is well worth for our learning.
Indeed, there were some differences between MR and normal persons, their endeavors attitude and effort should never be underestimated. So, why should we discriminate them?
