HIM Sports Day
Mass volunteer service 2 of Health in Mind 2011-2013 has been successfully held on 23rd Feb 2013 (Saturday), at Fung Kai No. 1 Secondary School. 119 students from 9 participating schools, 58 service users from New Life Building Halfway House & Sheltered Workshop, Caritas Hostel – Fanling, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association MINDSET Place, and Jardines Ambassadors participated.
By participation in athletic competition, the purpose of this activity is to enhance ex-mentally ill persons’ self-confidence. Meanwhile, strengthen students’ understanding on ex-mentally ill persons, and eliminate stigmatization and misconception on mental illness.
After the warm-up exercise, participants were divided into various groups to have different athletic competition, including: plastic bottle bowling, rope skipping, 2-man-3-feet, tag-o-wall etc. After the completion of first part of competition, all participants have lunch together and prepared for the second part of games in the afternoon. At the end, prizes were awarded to the three groups with highest score, and to arrange for group photo.
Through direct interaction with service users, the activity enhanced students’ understanding and acceptance of mentally ill, and to eliminate their misconception and stigmatization on mental illness. In additions, the activity enhanced the self-confidence of ex-mentally ill person and to integrate into the community.
